Policy and Procedures

Rules and policies are in place to make sure your child remains safe and well at school.

Our school uses the department's School Community Charter to ensure all of our communication is collaborative and respectful.

Attendance and absences

Students must attend school regularly so they can achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options.

In NSW, all children from the age of 6 are legally required to attend school or be registered for home schooling through the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). All students must complete Year 10, or its equivalent and remain in school, employment or training until they turn 17.

Missing school means your child misses out on vital information and maintaining learning routines. This can result in a loss of confidence and missing out on forming vital friendships.

Attendance is recorded each day. As a parent or caregiver you are responsible for ensuring your child attends school every day, including sports days unless your child:

• has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably these should be made after school or during holidays)
• is required to attend a recognised religious holiday
• is required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a funeral)
• is sick, or has an infectious illness.

If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, you might like to talk to the school principal or the school counsellor.

If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, including arriving late or leaving early, please either tell your child's teacher or the administration assistant at our school, or explain the reason by phone, email, or written note as soon as possible and within seven days.

Application for Extended Leave - Travel Application

An Application for Extended Leave - Travel Application must be applied for by the parent/carer of the student if the student is travelling overseas (for any period of time) or will be away longer than 10 school days. 

Application for Extended Leave 

The following applies;

• Travel outside of vacation periods are counted as an absence for statistical purposes.
• The application form must be submitted to the school office at least 2 weeks prior to the date being requested.
• Where a principal considers that the travel is appropriate during school term, a Certificate of Extended Leave - Travel will be issued to the parent and a copy placed in each student's record.
• An application may be declined when the percentage of the students' overall attendance is at or less than 85%, it is not in the best interests of the student or if the student has been the subject of contact with the Child Wellbeing Unit or Department of Community Justice.
• If an application is declined, the parent will be advised in writing via letter or email.  

School frameworks (school rules)

As well as following the department’s operational policies, we have developed frameworks for our students in line with our school’s values and commitments.

Values are taught in the classroom to help our students to:

• develop a love of learning
• pursue excellence and high standards
• develop care and respect for themselves and others
• take pride in their work
• exhibit a strong sense of fairness and social justice
• have respect for and understanding of Australia's history including the cultures and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first peoples of Australia, and Australia as a multicultural society
• have an appreciation of Australia's history and multicultural society
• actively participate as citizens.

All students are expected to:

• attend school every day, unless they are legally excused
• be in class on time and prepared to learn
• maintain a neat appearance and follow the school uniform policy
• behave safely, considerately and responsibly including when travelling to and from school
• follow class rules, speak courteously and cooperate with instructions and learning activities
• treat staff, other students and members of the school community with dignity and respect
• care for property belonging to themselves, the school and others.

Any behaviour that infringes on other people's safety such as harassment, bullying or any illegal behaviour will not be tolerated at our school.
